We Built Alameda County District 2 & Hayward out of LEGO

On Saturday, October 1st, 2016, we helped Supervisor Richard Valle and the Hayward Area Parks and Recreation District build the District 2 Map out of LEGO, as well as the city of Hayward out of LEGO.  It was for Science In The Park, a Biennial FREE family event that makes STEM and health compelling and accessible to children, families, and the general public in Alameda County District 2. 

Families were able to find where they lived in a map of District 2 and create their neighborhood out of LEGO.  They also were able to build Hayward out of LEGO, as well as play with other LEGO-Inspired STEM projects.  Check out the videos and pictures of the event below.  If you’d like us to run a similar event for your government agency, simply complete our Special Request Form HERE.

Play-Well at the Rocky Mountain Youth Development Conference

Last week members of our Colorado crew presented a new workshop to 34 youth development staff (mostly Boys & Girls club staff) at the Rocky Mountain Youth Development Conference. The program was called: Celebrate failure when you reach for the sky: Hands-on STEM learning to build resilience.- Play-Well TEKnologies 
 
The program lead participants through a playful building process using LEGO that highlighted the critical role of failing in science, engineering and life. Using a classroom-tested exercises they explored how to intentionally guarantee failure in a non-threatening way to allow youth to develop a positive relationship with failure. They used their building activity to demonstrate how to weave life metaphors and broader lessons into STEM lessons and STEM play.

GO (Girls Only) Engineering Day at Northglen High School

 On February 12th, Play-Well partnered with Northglen High School for their GO (Girls Only) Engineering Day. The goal of the day is to introduce high school girls to engineering positions and real world applications.  Throughout the day all female students partake in career panels, workshops and hear from guest speakers.  Play-Well ran a Engineering Challenge Bridge Challenge with a group of girls to teach about different types of bridges and how their structures differ. Girls worked in teams to build either corbeled arch bridges or truss bridges to span a 2.5ft distance between desks and be weight bearing.  The girls learned about compression and tension of trusses and how they are efficient in real bridges.  With collaboration and creativity all groups designed different bridges!

Building The World’s Longest LEGO Bridge in Tempe

On Saturday, March 19th, Play-Well TEKnologies and the City of Tempe will collaborate with families in the community to build a replica of the Tempe Old Mill Avenue Bridge out of LEGO.

We are hoping to build a 200-Foot Long LEGO bridge and we will need your help in order to do it. Come learn about various types of bridge architecture, play with LEGO, and be a part of one of the longest LEGO bridges ever made in the state of Arizona, maybe even the country. The best part about it is the event is free.

There are two separate time slots to register:

  • 10 AM – 12 PM
  •  12 PM – 2 PM
